We have discussed in length about Frank's maturity. It is clear that he was an unusual child from taking care of his brothers to giving his earnings to his mother. However as he turns 16. We see that in fact he is still a child. In your opinion, are you surpirised about this? Please explain your opinion with support from the book.

Frank turned to sixteen years old, and he was so innocence at that age in comparison with other guys of his same age. He was working in Easons, and there he met with his coworkers Eamon and Peter. Those guys knew a lot of things that Frank was unaware of. Eamon and Peter were those guys who smoked and knew all that kinds of things concerning to sex, birth control and condoms meanwhile Frank didn't know anything about it. Frank didn’t have any idea what Eamon was telling him when Eamon said, “Tis condoms, rubbers, French letters, things like that to stop the girls from getting up the pole”. Frank didn’t know what up the pole meant. Eamon had to explain everything to him. Eamon was mad about Frank’s questions and because of to have to explain all that kinds of sex things to Frank. Eamon told Frank that he was pure ignorant at his sixteen years old, and I think that Frank was innocence because he was a boy that saw life without naughtiness.
i think frank at that age was not a maturity person because a sixteen years old youngster should had known something about life, but he was very innocent. he thought that working would make him a man because he was the one who was supporting his family during this time. another example was when he went out with his uncle to get his first pint. he thought that going to the pub and having a drink was a way of showing everybody that he was already an adult. based on the facts frank was just a smart little boy...Liliana j.
I am not surprised that he was still thinking as a child, because usually when your father is around you, he would explain you somenthing about men's life, like sex, having his pints. In this case we see that Malachy is not around anymore, so all the things he knows about is what he heard from his friends. His friends didn't helping much eigther, becuase instead of giving him good advices, they made fun of him. As we read in the book they sppeak about sex, condoms, woman being pregnant. He was still a child in his mind. The evil on his friends show the remark inocent on him. I think this because whilw Gerry Halvey was thinking that Frank was going to get his girl away from him, Frank was triying to make Gerry look good and wasn't even thinking to have somenthing with the girl. He actually help them to get back.
In the book Eamon acted surprised that Frank didn't know about birth control he said, " Sixteen years of age and you are pure ignorant."
I am not surprised that Frank didn't Know about this because the most of the people in Limerick didn't know about birth control that is why the families were large and women have a lot of kids.Eamon and Peter knew all about birth control because they always read the protestant magazines and newspapers.
Eamon and Peter were surprised that Frank didn't smoke but I think Frank never smoked because his mother when she used to smoked her daily fag always told him that smoking was a bad habit.
But beside this Frank still a child and naive because of his strong belief in the catholic church that doesn't let him to even have bad thoughts.
I would not necessarily say that Frank wasn't mature, because only a mature individual is smart enough to know that his mother needs his help and thats when he decides to give her his wages. We could definitely say that he is not "street smart" and thats why he looks so behind compared to those to perverts that he has as co-workers, but I personally think he knows more about life in the sense of suffering.
Thank Carlos for your note from 2AM. I am agree with you.
I am not surprised about Frank when he turn 16.
First, I see Frank as a smart boy. He tryed to understand something about sex befor he met those gues. He read somthing in the library. He had some littel experiences on the green sofa and understood what kind of noise made his mom and Lamon Griffin. However, Frank did not know about condoms and why people use it. Is that mean he stiil a child? And after his friends explaine him what is mean those thing, he became adult? Sorry. It is my first opinion.
Opinion #2
Do you remember what happened with Frank when he was at church? He could not say everything about his "terrible thing" Father Gregory. Franciscon priest ask him,"Did you like to go to confesion?" Frank told," I can not Father." And priest deside to help him as a child. He said,"You could tell St. Francis, could not you?" Father told frank that he will be sit and listen it,and Frank really started to talk with St.Francis. He explain him all his sines.
So, Father Gregory could faind the way to Frank which help him with that. And the basic of this way was a child psychology.
Excellent guys-
But what do you think about what Liliana wrote? Do you think that his drinking was mature? What about after he left the pub? Did his actions show signs of immaturity?
I consider frank’s reactions and acts when it comes to sex because he was never openly taught about it, also his smooth and kind character towards his mother’s needs it’s obvious. He helps her economically but I think it’s because his life was full of suffering because of his dad’s decisions. In general frank stills a child he’s only 16 and a man it’s made not from one or two pins, but from his life experiences.
IVAN PORRAS
I'm not suprised that Frank was still thinking as a child when he was 16 years old, because he belived everything that people said. For example when he prayed to St. Francis in front of the priest, or when the priest said to him that Theressa was in heaven and he was in grace of God, Frank belived that and he forgat if he was responsible of her died. Also he was inocent because he didn't know anything about sex but is truth what Boris said becuse in those days everything about sex was a sin for the people in Limerick. Poor Frank when his friends made fun of him but I think he didn't know about this because Frank didn't have a good childhood because all the time he was thinking how he could help his family or the majority part of the time he was in the church praying for his sins.
I think frank had his first pin because it was a tradition for the people in Limerick and not because he really wanted. Maybe he drunk his first pin only because he wanted to demostrated to the people in limerick that he was a man and not a child.
I think Frank have their point of inmaturity because having a pint doesn't make you a adult as he thought, and go church drunk was totally irespectfull! but It was a mature at his age to work to support his family, not all kids have that kind of worries. And about sex, im not surprised at all because Frank didn't have a father to teach him something about sex, and all he knew was from his friends who made laugh of him, and its understandable too because at that time people don't talk about sex and all they say is that sex is a sin.
