Chapters 9 & 10
The family is hopeful that with Malachy (their father) leaving for England they will finally have money and luxuries like their neighbours. As we know Malachy did not send money to his family and basically abandoned them. Angela is left in a desperate state. What places does she turn to for medical and food assistance? Why is there so much shame in turning to some of these places?

he got to a point where she thought there was no more place to go, she didn't want to leave her children in the orphanage ( though she thought about it), so had to find another way to fit her children, it was the Dipensary. It was very sad for me to rad this because she really had to beg for help from them and the way I see it is that they were just making fun of the poor famiies asking them fool questions. As the book says it was worst than begging on the streets, everybody was listening to what you were saying. When Frank sow his mam begging for food and left over from the priest's dinner, he feels ashamed because we Know most of the families where getting better because of the war (having electricity and more food on the tables), so now his friends were going to laugh at him for been the son of a beggar. I think is normal at that age to think like that, when my mom ussed to sell on the strets I felt shame, because my friends didn't need to do that they had stable jobs. I could identify with him a lot. But their reality was worst.
first of all, malachy did not want to go there, he did not want to go there and fight for the england, but angela seen that most of the families were doing lane to get money orders from their fathers in englands. finally he went and after days angela got desperate because she have not received anything and she had to go to the dispensary to see a doctor because of frank's eyes. it was a shame for her because mr coffey and mr kane only wanted to laugh about the problems of the poor people Mr coffey made them to say their problems in front of everybody and then they could have fun and laugh.
Malachi father left Limerick to go to England to work. Angela and her children were happy with the idea that Malachi went there to work in that way they could have money to buy food and other supplies, but Malachi disappointed his family because he forgot to send money to his family. Due to Malachi’s irresponsibility as provider of his household, Angela had to beg for food and medical assistance. She went to the Dispensary to get public assistance. Her family didn’t have food, and her son Frank got a terrible infection in his eyes, and he needed medical attention, so she decided to go to Dispensary to get help for her family. She also had to beg at the door of the priests’ house because of the hunger. It was a shame to go to ask for help in the Dispensary place because Mr. Coffey and Mr. Kane whom were the guys in charged of that place they liked to laugh and have fun about the poor people who were looking for help. They loved to ridicule them in front of other. Mr. Coffey and Mr. Kane told everybody who was there the personal problems that those people had or why they were there. To see Angela begging in the streets was a shame because most of the families in Limerick were having better lifestyles because of the war. There were more jobs and most of the families were taking advantages of that, but unfortunately in Angela’s family case the things were worst and worst.
I think Frank and his brothers felt very proud of his mother because she always thought about them insted of her. It was very sad that she had to recurre to the Dispensary and the public assistance, because this is the worst place where the people can go. Angela doesn't care if the people laughed at her, because the only thing that she worried about was to find medical attention for his son or some food for her family. One more time we know that Angela was a very good mother, because the only thing that she thought about was her babies, she doesn't care what the people talked about them, she just wanted to protect her children and to be happy with them as they were but all together. She was strong because she was a mother and father at the same time when Malachy went to England where he was supposed to sent money to his family, but he forgot them.
Malachy fails to send any money to his family and Angela become desperate and decides to go to the Dispensary for public assistance, which she considers a terrible shame and was far worse than the dole or the St. Vincent de Paul Society, because it means you were one step away from putting your children in a orphanage and begging on the street.
The men in charge of giving out money and charity constantly humiliate people who is seeking for help. It's not enough that they are very poor, it's not enough that they are humiliate already because they must beg for assitance, it's not enough that the men torment them, they are also required to laugh along with their torments, or risk aid. The men humilate Angela saying she does not deserve it, because her husband is from the North and she is ignorant.
Unfortunately at this point Malachy senior is a total alcoholic so there is no sight of hope for this family.Angela has to go the Dispensary which is almost as bad as begging on the streets, but if I was Frank I would feel proud of my Mom instead of being ashamed, I mean shes not prostituting herself, she is doing everything she can to keep her babies alive which tells us what kind of a woman she is. If I was Angela if would have gone to the protestant place, im sure she would not have been so humiliated like she did by those ignorant men who were asking her all these questions and laughing at her, I am pretty sure thats a worst sin than a Catholic going to a protestant place asking for food, after all God loves us and we are all the same under his eyes.
Angela is a woman who has children and does not have any finantion help from her husband. She tryed to keep all her children in the family. She has to pay rent and buy some food. She is a poor. She is very poor. She decides to go the Dispensary for public assistace. She describe for her children this place as a "wors than going on the dole, wors than than going to the St.Vineent de Paul Society, wors than begging on the streets with the tinkers and the knackers." What can be happen with children if she does not di it? Thay could be at orphanage or die. We remember how many children Angela lost. She anderstand that is going tu hurt her and her children. Children's friends start lough for been a sons of beggar. Mr.Coffe and Mr.Kain have a good lough about poor people. She has to stand a front people and describe her situation and all people in the town going to know about her family. That why it is so much shame be there. In this situation she is a great mother.
Angela when first to the St Vincent de Paul Society, and then to the Dispensary, which she considered the worst thing that could happen to a family. That was the place for the people that beg on the streets. She had to put aside her pride and ate her own words about the dispensary for the relief of her children.Frank and his brothers went to the point that they had to steal food to survive. I don't think Frank was ashamed of his mother, he just couldn't understand why they have to do all this when his father was working in England and making a lot of money.
CECELIA OKE. When Malachy McCurt went to England all his family was happy most expecialy his wife, because she and children was full of shame. she has to beg for food or frank her son will go and work before they could eat. Therefore, thier father went to look for money in order to have better life. After he left they were still poor,Angela went to the resturant to beg for food and Frank was sick too. She took him to dispesry store to treatment. Angela was shame and depress, the place was long way , she can not walk , and no money to take a bus . cecelia oke.
All this started when Malachy (father) went to England to work but he never sent any money at all and practically he abandoned his family. In my opinion that was the worst thing he had done as father and husband. They didn't even have bread for breakfast and then got sick, so they went to the St Vincent de Paul Society and then to the Dispensary where Mr. Coffey and Mr. Kane humiliated them. It was so much the hunger that Frankie and his little brothers stole food and Angela begged for food. I understand as a kid he may feels ashamed but her mother did it because of them, she didn't want her children to die for hunger.
Rabiasadia.Itwas very sad for me to read this because she had to bag for help from them .They were making fun of poor familes and asking them fool questiones. When frank saw his mom begging for food and left overfrom the priest dinner,he felt ashamed because he knew modt of the familes getting better. They more electricity and more food .his frinds laugh at him for been son of bagger
when they need medical help they go to the dispensary where poor people see doctors and get their medicines. this places are the last resource of help, when the head of a family is dead or disappeared and there is no money.
people is ashame of going to this places because it is like begging out in the streets for money or food. i think they don't want to be exposed and let anyone know that they are "poor", they don't have any support from their father or husband, they are ashemed of turning themselves for help.
